An Akathist is a special genre of church prayer, composed of 25 hymns: 13 kontakia and 12 ikoi, which are read alternately. The word “Akathist” comes from the Greek “ἀκάθιστος,” meaning “not sitting,” emphasizing that Akathists are traditionally read while standing. Exceptions are allowed only for the sick or pilgrims in transit.
Why Read an Akathist?
Reading Akathists is an important part of an Orthodox Christian’s spiritual life. It helps focus on God’s grace, glorify the Lord, and offer prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos or saints. Through Akathists, we express gratitude, petitions, and praise, receiving spiritual support and strengthening our faith.
“God looks not at the number of words but at the sincerity of the heart” (St. John of Kronstadt).
Akathists are also read for specific needs. For example:
• The Akathist to the Theotokos before Her icon “The Queen of All” is read for healing from cancer.
• The Akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is read in difficult life situations.
• The Akathist to the Lord Jesus Christ is read for spiritual strengthening and thanksgiving.
How to Read an Akathist
1. Time and Place. Akathists can be read at any time of the day, either at home or in church. It is essential to complete the entire prayer in one session without splitting it into parts.
2. Preparation. Reading an Akathist is a spiritual labor, so it is recommended to receive a blessing from your spiritual father before beginning.
3. Posture. Akathists are traditionally read while standing, demonstrating reverence to the saint or event being addressed.
What Akathists Are Available?
There are many Akathists dedicated to the Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos, and various saints. Among the most well-known are:
• The Akathist to the Theotokos,
• The Akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker,
• The Akathist to martyrs, venerable saints, and apostles.
Each Akathist has its own purpose, and you can turn to a specific saint depending on your spiritual needs.
